Step 3 Is financial debt keeping you from your dream?

Is financial debt keeping you from your dream?

Continuing with the theme of Stop creating a life that you need a vacation from, another area in our life that we need to focus on is finances. I would love to say that we have been good stewards with our money and our financial decisions but in all honesty I cannot say that at all. In fact like most Americans we have racked up some hefty bills. I can honestly say that I have become very good at charging things and have racked up some hefty debt, between credit and school loans! Funny thing is there is not a boat or fancy car in the driveway to show where all the dollars went that we charged. The good news is finally I have gotten a hold of this monster problem and we have it under control now. It is going to take some time to fill in the massive hole we have created but we are at least no longer making it any deeper. We have really curbed our spending and have managed to save up a reserve amount for emergency and we are not in the process of paying down and closing in on that debt.

Debt is a terrible thing and it can literally suck the life out of you and turn you into a very unhappy person if you let it. It can really paralyze you and make you really hate your life. Thankfully, we now see it for what it is and no longer add to the balances. Before purchasing anything I really ask myself if it is really needed and can I live without it? If I really think I need it I will not purchase it in the store but walk away and go home and wait. After a few days if I think I still need it I return to purchase it. It does cause an additional trip back to the store but more often I decide I really don’t need the item any more. Retail stores have become so good into hypnotizing us into believing we cannot live without the latest plastic thingy from China. So again, I have realized stepping back and putting some time between myself and the item usually breaks this hypnotic hold it has on me.

We need to have all debt taken care of before we can pack up and head west and I believe my desire to move, surpasses the desire to have things! I believe that is the secret for getting out of debt. You have to find your why. What is your debt stopping you from doing? What do you really desire? Is it to move, to work less, to travel more, to spend more time with your family? Whatever the reason if you can really picture yourself in that and make that your strongest passion and desire you will no longer crave items that will cause you to rack up your credit card. That is your why, you should be asking why I am willing to not buy this now so I can …….....later. Discover your why and I trust you will be paying off that debt like we are finally doing. What helps you to be more frugal with your money and not charge things?

  • Debt is a huge problem for most of us. I have heard reports that the average household has $7,000 of credit card debt. Great post. Do you really need the latest, probably not.
